You know it when it happens. That unbearable mini-migraine that comes on if cold stuff (like slurpees, popsicles, or ice cream) touches the roof of your mouth. The dreaded brain freeze happens due to a nerve reaction (in the spheno-palantine ganglion, to be precise), that causes the blood vessels in your brain to swell. When the blood vessels swell, you get a headache. Luckily it usually lasts for less than a minute.
